News from the Pacific Central District of the UUA
Dear Friends,

I got my first phone call from the anti-marriage equality folks this past Wednesday. A recorded woman's voice asked me press 1 in order to protect marriage as the union between a man and a woman only. My emotional reaction to the call really took me by surprise; it was as if someone had just committed an act of violence in front of me. To me. It felt like hate speech.

Our UU Legislative Ministry of California, working in partnership with Equality for All, is asking for our immediate help in standing up to this well-organized and well-funded campaign, working to put a constitutional amendment on the November ballot that would forbid same sex marriage in California. We need congregational teams to join the Rapid Response team, to work in their own communities, and we need to get those folks identified right away! The time you can give, even if only a couple of hours a week, can make all the difference!

Please report any sightings of this group's activities to the Equality for All Tip Line. Ask the petitioners, politely of course, what petitions they have (some will have more than one; some would even repeal all domestic partnership protections currently in state law), ask if they are paid or volunteer staff, take samples of any literature they are dispensing, and, if others are within ear shot, politely ask if they understand how such a law harms us all. Don't let things get hot--if the conversation takes a hostile turn, simply move away from it.

This is also a great time to make another contribution to the UU Legislative Ministry Action Network, helping them fight back. There's no time to waste on this, and the stakes are high. Please help, just as much and as soon as you can.

Stay in touch,

District Assembly Registration Now Open DA 2008 Logo

We're moving at full speed getting ready for this year's fantastic District Assembly! We've got over two dozen workshops, some great entertainment with Roy Zimmerman, special programming for children and youth, our annual reception for congregational presidents, Keynoter, the Reverend Robert Latham, and Featured Presenter, the Reverend Victoria Safford. Don't miss this one!

We'll gather at the brand new Marriott Hotel in Fremont, CA, where we've been given a discounted rate of $89 for a single or double room (nice work, Chuck!). Hotel room reservations may be made online. Programming begins the evening of Friday, April 25, with the traditional Banner Parade and Opening Worship, and runs through Closing Worship on Sunday, April 27.

DYGT (pronounced DigIt) - District Youth Groups Together, offers special programs to bring high school aged teens from all corners of the PCD together. They'll be games and activities to help get to know one another, along with a swim party (don't forget to bring your swim suit). Daycare and programming for nursery through teens are described on our website.

We're looking for Volunteers to help us pull it all off. These are short shifts, that won't require you to miss out on the fun and the learning, and your service will be greatly appreciated. Please contact District Administrator, Chuck Rosene, (510) 601-1437, if you're willing to take on one of these assignments:

Our theme, Simple Gifts, invites us to remember our core blessings, and to extend the gift of ourselves to one another. We are the ones who create, maintain, and bless our larger movement; we do it together. It will be a blessing to be together, at DA 2008!

Many thanks to photographer Harold Wood, for sending along this great shot showing the worship space of our 26-member Visalia congregation.

This is the second of what I hope will be a 38-part series sharing these images with one another. Send yours, along with the name of the photographer to cilla@pcd-uua.org.

The Other Election
UUA Candidates for President Open Their Campaigns Candidates 2009

Two fine candidates have officially thrown hats in the ring, announcing their intentions to run for the presidency of our UUA in 2009. The Reverend Laurel Hallman, who serves the First Unitarian Church in Dallas, declared her candidacy at a congregational meeting on January 6. The video of this announcement may be seen online. Her web site is at www.laurelhallman.com.

The Reverend Peter Morales serves the Jefferson Unitarian Church in Golden, CO. His announcement came in his January 13 sermon, and the video is also online. His web site is at www.moralesforuuapresident.org.

Candidates for the office of both President and Moderator are nominated by petition. This requires no fewer than 25 congregations, and no fewer than 5 congregations in each of 5 separate districts, to certify that a vote of their members or governing board has authorized their signing of the petition. Candidates must file no later than January 1, 2009. Per campaign procedures, a web page has been established for use in disseminating information about the elections to the congregations.
