Leadership School
Congratulations to the Class of 2008!
Our journey to the Sierra Nevada mountain town of Groveland, California proved worth every effort for the stunning views, fresh air, and wonderful grounds of Tuolumne Trails. The site staff are attentive and caring and once again the magic of Leadership School birthed another Beloved Unitarian Universalist Community.
This year’s class came from our congregations in Berkeley (Kensington), Santa Cruz, Redwood City and Fresno; Honolulu sent two students, Santa Rosa sent three and San Jose sent four! The Leadership School staff this year included Sterling Newberry who served as the Community Building Instructor with a new dynamic program. The Rev. Cathleen Diane Cox served again as Religious Heritage, Identity & Values Instructor as well as Worship Creation and Chaplain for the week. Karen Araujo returned as Dean and assistants were Kelly Burnett, Bob Miess and Greg Rouillard. This year’s move to the mountains proved to be challenging to all and we are so grateful to all our staff and students for their support and willingness to stay present to all the newness while doing such transformational work. We could not put on such a valuable program without each and every one… Our hearts are filled with joy and meaningful connections.
We say “good journey” to a gifted instructor. Over the last five years, we have had the amazing privilege of watching a student develop into an outstanding Community Building Instructor. Sterling Newberry, now of the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Portland, Oregon, came to PCD Leadership School as a student from Unitarian Universalist Church of Berkeley in Kensington in the class of 2003. He returned the following year and served as a graduate assistant and after a few years serving from mentee to Co-Instructor, Sterling blossomed as a gifted Community Building Instructor. He followed in the very large footsteps of Jim Burneo who retired last year. Sterling, we bid you farewell and all the best on your Unitarian Universalist journey. You leave us better than you found us!
Reaffirming our Leadership School Vision. This year’s experiences have called forth a need to expand our committee, select a new CB Instructor and set aside time to realign our program with our vision. We look forward to a year of expansion and renewal with the goal of offering a broader reaching program drawing from many sources that will serve our congregations with a continually challenging, dynamic and meaning-filled experience for Unitarian Universalist leaders.
